Doesn't this boy look like he's having a ball reading?? Look at that adorable little microphone!!! This is the Easi-Speak USB Recorder from Learning Resources.
Now, while they did request that I do a review.....that's all I was asked to do: give my completely unbiased, teacherly opinion on this product. Well what teacher doesn't love telling their friends about new teacher stuff?? They agreed to give me one to keep and I get one to give away to a lucky person...... what a great deal?!
So, since I had never heard of this product, I figured there are others who haven't heard of it either........Here it is!
Ok, so here is what I thought about it........
I gotta tell ya I'm no good with tech gadgets like digital cameras, dvd players, basically anything that comes with a cord......
But immediately when I opened the package I noticed that it seemed super-duper simple (which is good because I'm super-duper simple ;0) The package contained the Easi-Speak Microphone and 1 cord. There aren't alot of buttons....so far so good... I might be able to handle this..... The microphone is ultra light-weight and has a lanyard that you can wear as a necklace.
It took me all of 15 seconds to figure out how to work this microphone (yes the teacher who can't operate a simple ditigal camera correctly)..... The "record" button is red and the "play" button is green........It really is THAT simple....And that's is really good when you teach kinder like me.... I have no doubt that my kids will be able to learn to use this gadget pretty quickly!
Something else I like is that if you want to download something you've recorded to your computer - you simply slip off the black tip on the end of the microphone, plug it into the USB on your computer- and BAM! it's downloaded! You CANNOT get much more easy than that!
And NO, NO, NO batteries - just connect to your computer's USB to charge!! Woo-hoo! I don't know how many times one of our cool classroom gadgets didn't work because the batteries were dead -- uuggghhhh (don't act like it never happened to you - we both know it has :0) This thing will never run out of batteries!
Ok....it's a cool new toy -- but what would I do with it at school?
I can think of probably a million and one things to do with this awesome little "toy".
1. Model using fluency and expression during shared reading. After recording, you can play back your reading and discuss.
2. After you've modeled using the microphone to record your reading, you can place this microphone in the big books centers for kids to record their reading of beloved books. How cool for them to "read" a book to the class during share time. Plus, I could see keeping a record of students' reading for documentation or to send to parents.
3. Perhaps your kiddos would like to write a song - and then sing it! I can see their eyes lighting up as I write this!
4. The Easi-Speak is also a great way to record learning.... if you are in the middle of a science experiment - kids can record their findings instead of always writing. This would be particularly motivating for those who struggle with writing.
5. I plan to use this during our calendar time. The "calendar leader" will use and record. Then, during literacy centers, the kids at the listening center will be able to listen to the recording and go through calendar time again.
I can see this motivating the reluctant readers and/or speakers in class!
Now, for the fun part.......Do you want one of these? Could you use it? I'm going to have a SUPER simple giveaway. Here is how to enter my giveaway to get your own Easi-Speak (a $69.99 value):
1. Please follow my blog --> :0)
2. In the comments, write and tell us how you could use the Easi-Speak in your classroom. (please include your email in case you win!)
That's it!! Not too painful and maybe you'll help others get some great ideas and maybe pick up a few ideas for yourself.
The winner will be announced on my FaceBook Fan Page on Thursday. The winner will have 24 hours to contact me at jeanniemleigh@yahoo.com. If not, I will announce a new winner.
Good luck I hope you win!!!
I also want to thank Learning Resources for offering this fantastic prize!! I am so excited to use mine in my classroom this year.....that is IF I can pry it out of my 4 year old's hands (he loves it too)...... As teachers, we really appreciate fantastic companies that value us and our opinions!
You may want to follow Learning Resources in the following ways:

I would use this to help students work on fluency. They would be able to hear how they really sound.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I would use it for running records.
Finally, it would be helpful to use recordings at parent/teacher conferences.

Love this! I am a speech-language pathologist in a PreK-3 through 8th grade school. The children need auditory models and feedback for speech and language tasks. The Easi-Speak would allow them to hear their own productions of speech and pronunciation of target vocabulary. It is immediate and increases frequency. Great learning tool!!! Thank you for this opportunity! ctwaters5557@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI think this would be a great tool to encourage reluctant readers and to entice everyone to share during group time. Hope I win! Thanks for the great opportunity. Charme'

I am so excited about this product. I can use it to make new books for the listening center without having to pay an arm and a leg for one story!!!!! Okay, can you see my excitement!.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah! I follow your blog. I can see a few great uses. The first is something that I am working towards. With Inquiry learning, we NEED to hear the ideas of the kids. This would serve the purpose as any investigation starts. An 'artifact' of speech. Yippee!
ReplyDeleteNaturally, calendar/weather guy/gal, fluency as they record their stories on their own, getting reluctant readers/speakers to share their thoughts and their reading.
I've used the cheapo 'mic's from Dollarama, and it makes a real difference in the kiddos. Having a recorded piece of evidence? Priceless!

Hi
ReplyDeleteNot only would I luv to use this in my K class for endless uses.....but my daughter who is 5yrs is excited to try her reading with the mic as well. Cheers, Sheila
I have been looking for a microphone!!! I am wanting to use this for "open mic friday" in my classroom--students will have an opportunity to practice a fluency piece and record it into the microphone, and then I will select students each week to "perform" at open mic friday! I've also thought about inviting the public or possibly special guests of the students who are performing each week! This microphone is exactly what I've been looking for!!!
ReplyDeleteI would use this to promote fluency during Daily 5. I could also ask my students to answer some questions and listen to their responses, which could then be sent or played to parents during conference time. The list goes on!

I would love one of these. I would use it to have my kids read books to it during library corner then allow the listening corner to listen to the books they read.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog. That would be so cool to let the students hear themselves read. Students can read into the microphone and play it back to hear themselves. That would be great when stressing fluency! :)

ReplyDeleteHeather (heathernnance@yahoo.com)
Hi Jeannie,
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher of play based learning centres the opportunities to use the microphone are endless!! Each day a 'reporter' is set a task and reports back during reflection time - they could independently record their report for the class to listen to and in turn reflect on and set future goals on their tone, pace, content, etc of their speech.
Presently we have a weather centre in our classroom and I'd love to have the kids imagine they are a weather person and extend on their learning about clouds, wind and weather patterns. They could record a weather report just as someone on TV would and have it play for students who work at the centre. How excited they would be!
Thanks for the opportunity and all that you share on your blog! <3

ReplyDeleteI would have my kiddos record themselves for oral assessments in math, like counting to 100, etc. I can listen later if needed! :) I would also have them record themselves reading so they can hear themselves and I can keep it as record to show growth. It would be a great tool to have in the classroom and motivating! Mariasjk@wideopenwest.com

ReplyDeleteHaving one of these would be helpful in so many ways!
We have kiddos practice reading books, then I jump through hoops to record them reading and burn it to a cd to keep with the book for our listening center and for the child to take home. This device would make that soooo much easier!
Thank you for the opportunity.

Love this! There are so many things you can do with this microphone. The first thing I would do is have the students create a classbook about their hopes and dreams for the year. I would then have them read their stories into the microphone. I would scan their pictures and add their voice to the pictures. Love your blog - have for a long time!
ReplyDeleteHow to use the easy-speak... let me count the ways...
independent monitoring, running record files, fluency, progress monitoring for language arts, dolch sight words, letter sound/letter ID tracking, evidence for language based disabilities, communication with parents (to share with them their child's progress and areas of concern), to record student shared materials (writer's workshop, Student lead read-aloud), audio files for writing (pre-planning, and to review for fluent writing/error correction for editing).... I could go on, I think I'd drive you crazy. Just understand that I've thought LONG and hard about all the uses an Easy-Speak would support and considered finding a way (some way) of gaining access to one for my classroom. I'd LOVE to see my students benefit from this amazing give away, and if they don't... I'll just be happy to hear how other students have benefitted and the multiple uses... after all, we learn and grow to be better teachers/educators through shared experience and knowledge.

Also, what a wonderful idea for using in centers and then I can listen to the recordings later to do some assessments myself!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the wonderful ideas. I wish I could get blogging and join all of you excellent models.

You could also use it as a parts of speech search or vocab review.

Wow, there are endless ways the EasySpeak can be used by both my little friends and me! It would be a great tool that would give the kiddos the opportunity to be in the "spotlight" in front of their peers while sharing their reading and writing talents! I also see this microphone being used during our community helpers unit so the students can interview the school staff and "report" back/teach the class about our community helpers on campus. At the close of the day, I would like to use the EasySpeak to record assignments, directions and/or announcements that my absent students missed.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen this either. I follow you on Facebook and love all you have to offer. This would be a greater tool for fluency and performing in front of others. Might have to purchase one if I don't win!

Hello Mrs Sykes
Oh my goodness, the things I could do with this!! The children could use it to read, tell stories, recite poetry, interview each other and others at school, record directions for other students to follow (and see if their recorded instructions produce the results they are trying to achieve). They could practice their readers' theaters. They could practice their counting and alphabet. They could sing songs. They could practice with their rhythm instruments. Anything and everything that they would like to hear back again. And I am absolutely certain that, once this amazing device is in our classroom, we will come up with many more ways to use it. My fingers are crossed that I am the lucky winner!! =c)

-It would be great to have at the Author's Chair when they read their story and then I could put a copy of their story and the easi-speak in our Listen to Reading area and visitors to our room could listen to some of our great stories!
There are soooooo many ways that I could use this in my classroom....Calendar, when the "weather" person announces the weather in the morning, reading groups, when I want them to REALLY listen LOL. the list goes on and on. Thank you!!!!Christine A

That is such a fun tool to have in the classroom. I also teach kindergarten, and there are so many ways you could use this device. Just thinking of the beginning of the year and the child that is sad and missing Mom and Dad. You could have the parents record a message and when that child is sad, you could play the message to cheer him/her up.
