Who Wants One of These? Easi-Speak Giveaway!

Doesn't this boy look like he's having a ball reading?? Look at that adorable little microphone!!! This is the Easi-Speak USB Recorder from Learning Resources.

Awhile back I was contacted by Learning Resources to do a review for them on the Easi-Speak Digital Microphone..... I got to be honest. I had never heard of this product, but I know the company. It's a great, reputable company that is known for creating great educational products. So, I excitedly said SURE!

Now, while they did request that I do a review.....that's all I was asked to do: give my completely unbiased, teacherly opinion on this product. Well what teacher doesn't love telling their friends about new teacher stuff?? They agreed to give me one to keep and I get one to give away to a lucky person...... what a great deal?!

So, since I had never heard of this product, I figured there are others who haven't heard of it either........Here it is!

Ok, so here is what I thought about it........

I gotta tell ya I'm no good with tech gadgets like digital cameras, dvd players, basically anything that comes with a cord......

But immediately when I opened the package I noticed that it seemed super-duper simple (which is good because I'm super-duper simple ;0) The package contained the Easi-Speak Microphone and 1 cord. There aren't alot of buttons....so far so good... I might be able to handle this..... The microphone is ultra light-weight and has a lanyard that you can wear as a necklace.

It took me all of 15 seconds to figure out how to work this microphone (yes the teacher who can't operate a simple ditigal camera correctly)..... The "record" button is red and the "play" button is green........It really is THAT simple....And that's is really good when you teach kinder like me.... I have no doubt that my kids will be able to learn to use this gadget pretty quickly!

Something else I like is that if you want to download something you've recorded to your computer - you simply slip off the black tip on the end of the microphone, plug it into the USB on your computer- and BAM! it's downloaded! You CANNOT get much more easy than that!

And NO, NO, NO batteries - just connect to your computer's USB to charge!! Woo-hoo! I don't know how many times one of our cool classroom gadgets didn't work because the batteries were dead -- uuggghhhh (don't act like it never happened to you - we both know it has :0) This thing will never run out of batteries!

Ok....it's a cool new toy -- but what would I do with it at school?

I can think of probably a million and one things to do with this awesome little "toy".

1. Model using fluency and expression during shared reading. After recording, you can play back your reading and discuss.

2. After you've modeled using the microphone to record your reading, you can place this microphone in the big books centers for kids to record their reading of beloved books. How cool for them to "read" a book to the class during share time. Plus, I could see keeping a record of students' reading for documentation or to send to parents.

3. Perhaps your kiddos would like to write a song - and then sing it! I can see their eyes lighting up as I write this!

4. The Easi-Speak is also a great way to record learning.... if you are in the middle of a science experiment - kids can record their findings instead of always writing. This would be particularly motivating for those who struggle with writing.

5. I plan to use this during our calendar time. The "calendar leader" will use and record. Then, during literacy centers, the kids at the listening center will be able to listen to the recording and go through calendar time again.

I can see this motivating the reluctant readers and/or speakers in class!

Now, for the fun part.......Do you want one of these? Could you use it? I'm going to have a SUPER simple giveaway. Here is how to enter my giveaway to get your own Easi-Speak (a $69.99 value):

1. Please follow my blog --> :0)
2. In the comments, write and tell us how you could use the Easi-Speak in your classroom. (please include your email in case you win!)

That's it!! Not too painful and maybe you'll help others get some great ideas and maybe pick up a few ideas for yourself.

The winner will be announced on my FaceBook Fan Page on Thursday. The winner will have 24 hours to contact me at jeanniemleigh@yahoo.com. If not, I will announce a new winner.

Good luck I hope you win!!!
I also want to thank Learning Resources for offering this fantastic prize!! I am so excited to use mine in my classroom this year.....that is IF I can pry it out of my 4 year old's hands (he loves it too)...... As teachers, we really appreciate fantastic companies that value us and our opinions!

Also, I would use it for running records.

Finally, it would be helpful to use recordings at parent/teacher conferences.

  4. Love this! I am a speech-language pathologist in a PreK-3 through 8th grade school. The children need auditory models and feedback for speech and language tasks. The Easi-Speak would allow them to hear their own productions of speech and pronunciation of target vocabulary. It is immediate and increases frequency. Great learning tool!!! Thank you for this opportunity! ctwaters5557@gmail.com

  8. Oh, yeah! I follow your blog. I can see a few great uses. The first is something that I am working towards. With Inquiry learning, we NEED to hear the ideas of the kids. This would serve the purpose as any investigation starts. An 'artifact' of speech. Yippee!
Naturally, calendar/weather guy/gal, fluency as they record their stories on their own, getting reluctant readers/speakers to share their thoughts and their reading.
I've used the cheapo 'mic's from Dollarama, and it makes a real difference in the kiddos. Having a recorded piece of evidence? Priceless!

  10. I have been looking for a microphone!!! I am wanting to use this for "open mic friday" in my classroom--students will have an opportunity to practice a fluency piece and record it into the microphone, and then I will select students each week to "perform" at open mic friday! I've also thought about inviting the public or possibly special guests of the students who are performing each week! This microphone is exactly what I've been looking for!!!

  11. I would use this to promote fluency during Daily 5. I could also ask my students to answer some questions and listen to their responses, which could then be sent or played to parents during conference time. The list goes on!

  24. Hi Jeannie,
As a teacher of play based learning centres the opportunities to use the microphone are endless!! Each day a 'reporter' is set a task and reports back during reflection time - they could independently record their report for the class to listen to and in turn reflect on and set future goals on their tone, pace, content, etc of their speech.
Presently we have a weather centre in our classroom and I'd love to have the kids imagine they are a weather person and extend on their learning about clouds, wind and weather patterns. They could record a weather report just as someone on TV would and have it play for students who work at the centre. How excited they would be!
Thanks for the opportunity and all that you share on your blog! <3

  55. Love your blog - have for a long time!

How to use the easy-speak... let me count the ways...
independent monitoring, running record files, fluency, progress monitoring for language arts, dolch sight words, letter sound/letter ID tracking, evidence for language based disabilities, communication with parents (to share with them their child's progress and areas of concern), to record student shared materials (writer's workshop, Student lead read-aloud), audio files for writing (pre-planning, and to review for fluent writing/error correction for editing).... I could go on, I think I'd drive you crazy. Just understand that I've thought LONG and hard about all the uses an Easy-Speak would support and considered finding a way (some way) of gaining access to one for my classroom. I'd LOVE to see my students benefit from this amazing give away, and if they don't... I'll just be happy to hear how other students have benefitted and the multiple uses... after all, we learn and grow to be better teachers/educators through shared experience and knowledge.

They could practice their readers' theaters. They could practice their counting and alphabet. They could sing songs. They could practice with their rhythm instruments. Anything and everything that they would like to hear back again. And I am absolutely certain that, once this amazing device is in our classroom, we will come up with many more ways to use it. My fingers are crossed that I am the lucky winner!! =c)

  91. This would be a great tool fluency and for getting reluctant readers to read. This also could be used for giving slow readers some immediate feedback..I can just see the look on my little kindergarteners faces when they finally hear themselves read that book they have been trying to read!
Replaying for parents also would be wonderful!

  92. Looks amazing! and so simple too. I can imagine all grades of children loving and getting great use out of this in a classroom. I teach learning support children who would struggle with their fluency - this would be fantastic for them

  93. I would use this for my kids to read their writing to themselves and hear it back. Often they don' realize the mistakes they'e made unti they HEAR it.

  94. I followed your blog! I found you through pinterest and am so glad that I did :)

I would use the microphone with my first graders to promote fluency. I would allow students the opportunity to record their own stories that they had written too!

  98. Jeannie, this technology seems awesome. Like you said, easy to use, lightweight, and no batteries! I would use this to send home, along with a book, with the children I teach and have parent and child record the story. Then when the child returns to class, he/she can proudly share the story with classmates! Thanks for yoru blog and for offering this! gabbi.browne@gmail.com

  99. I would love to win this! I would use it for a fluency center in my room. Then I could use the recordings students make throughout the year to show parents their progress.

  101. I work one-on-one with dyslexic students. I could use this to aid the students with expression, accuracy, and self-confidence. This would also be a great aid for my junior high and high school students during test prep.

  104. I follow you too! This would be such a great resource for my bilingual class. I could use it to model fluency while reading. Some of my students need that confidence boost and I know a tool like this could make them feel like a celebrity.

  111. I think I would like to let them take it home and have them read with a parent or family member- then they could play it back at school.
It would promote the reading at home- and let those parents who cant come into the room be a part of our class.

  113. I follow your blog and your FB! The possibilities are ENDLESS with this fun "toy" but I was just thinking a recorded book review where they read from their favorite book then tell why they love it so much - and share with the class! (Also liking the thought of Read to Self during Daily 5)

  114. That is such a fun tool to have in the classroom. I also teach kindergarten, and there are so many ways you could use this device. Just thinking of the beginning of the year and the child that is sad and missing Mom and Dad. You could have the parents record a message and when that child is sad, you could play the message to cheer him/her up.
